From the very start, I was hooked. Like my newest discovery, Cormoran Strike, and detectives like Sherlock Holmes and even, back to my childhood, Encyclopedia Brown, it's the sleuth who sees what others miss and is far superior intellectually, but doesn't rub it in people's faces (although I know Holmes does at times). Scudder is hard-nosed and beaten down because of his past, and is tested by his present.
