Ch1
Early attachment; secure, anxious breaking down further into ambivalent and avoidant.

When I young child with the latter attachments experiences loss, they are more likely to experience denial, from their feelings making it harder to reattach with the child.

A lovey psychoanalytic saying
“ the love of others comes into being simultaneously with the recognition of their existence “

Fuck Aristotle, fuck plato. Big up the sothist

They taught excellence, rather than truth or goodness. This is similar to quality, classical and romantic.

I had no idea, the questions of objectivity and subjectivity where asked back then.
The sothist and their ideas largely forgotten, in place of Aristotlian philosophy, shaping our modern science to this day. Dualism and dialectics, replacing Quiality

The fixing of the stuck screw, I think is really good. Getting stuck in your way is all the preconceived notions you have about the screw. If one lets go of those, and allows them to sit stuck -in no consciousness, this is what the Buddhist do - a solution will come up. There isn’t a single solution, but the path of quality will help you arrive at solution to your problems. If one maintains on their path of quality

Ch25

I haven’t really updated my reading, it’s been wonderful. But tedious at times a couple chapters back he discusses geometry to explain science and quality. It went over my head a bit but the notion of harmony and its search is something I’ve heard of science before. The harmony is quality, quality is the world.

The train metaphor, I think is good and something I’ll keep and use.

It’s getting really good, I’m to tired to go through the chapters, it’s late.

It exists in a trinity; mind matter and quality. But people threes annoying. So he reason out, that quality has to be more fundamental

But I’ll say this, Quality is the Tao, the undefinable force which allows for romantic and classical quality to emerge.

Quality is not an effect but an event, when a subject observes an object!

You will not climb the mountain if your goal is to prove yourself each step is self-centred active balance with your internal sense. Rejecting the hearing now because the goal is external and distant.

He’s never satisfied with the hair always looking ahead and when he reaches another checkpoint, he’s still unhappy because that becomes the new here. Each step should rather be an act of the devotion, a pilgrimage

Ch17 more metaphors

Future destination is a shallow goal, it’s the sides of the mountain which sustained life not the top. Here’s where things grow.
But of course, without the top, you can’t have any sides since the top that defines the sides.

Ch 17 - mountain metaphors

Climbing a mountain with little effort and no desire is how one does it, if you feel restless you go faster, if tired slower. The equilibrium between these is sweet spot for the climb, that way it’s not about the destination but about the climb, allowing you to pay attention to the path you’re on.

Ch17- as even if these techniques are used, but sloppily just get by, they would still get bad grade even if they fulfilled the requirements, as what was lacking was the quality, something that they could see, without having to articulate it. It then created a new goal, not one of a good grade, but instead one of an attempt to produce quality.

Ch17 - Quality, this definition was true, you can see quality even if you can’t articulate it. At least in the context of writing, one can discern a high quality paper from a low quality paper. From there it created a purpose for learning rhetoric techniques as they show how people make their papers high quality, rather than understanding the techniques as principles in the abstract.

Ch17-
Non-definition of Quality - “quality is a characteristic of thought & statement that is recognised by a non-thinking process. Because definition definitions are a product of rigid formal thinking quality cannot be defined.” This is the Phardus defined quality, this allowed for flexibility and creativity in writing. He hated this to some degree as it was an irrational way of defining it.

Mountain routes - metaphor Jesus Moses created paths through their language, they have been obscured by science but yet the mountain remains.
Top left brick, coin and finger - these assignments were given to destroy any ability for a student to regurgitate what was said before by others, encouraging looking first hand at things
Destroying grades, to encourage people to learn to gain knowledge and not grade

Ch15 - I hope you’re teaching quality, this chapter mainly introduces Pharduses time at university as a lecture, and eventually becoming puzzled by the question of what quality is

P3-ch16- this chapter introduces the attempt to answer this question, splitting it into a more open ended exploration and then a systematic one, he explores the former here.

Ch14-this expansion of rationality/reason can be highlighted with Columbus discovering the new world or Copernicus holding the sun & moving the earth, these things did not break reason but instead showed how these things expanded what rationality & reason were, our current classical reason, needs expanding beyond itself. A new form of reason. Phaedrus was an Ancient Greek philosopher, a rhetorician condemned by plato

Ch14- the disconnect from technology and feeling & spirit. This ugliness is justified for satisfying martial needs, this however is an unsatisfactory justification, and people see this more clearly, eg anti pollution, anti technological stances and ways of life.

He argues that the issue here is not a failure of the rationality itself but instead rationality needs to expand its detention to account for these things

Ch14- He assert this a form of art, similar to sculpture. Further asserting his notion of the unnatural nature of divorcing technology from art, this used to not be the case and our society has made the wrong turns leading to this separation.

This separation was able to be ignored as humans than more immediate needs to attend to - food, shelter etc. But with these being more secure one can see the ugliness clearer

Ch 14 - opposed to the most elegant or best way of assembly. He links an example of a novice and craftsman’s, in which the latter doesn’t follow instructions to the t but rather changes his approach as he moves along, becoming harmonious with the thing he’s working on. He is able to attend and this leads to his mind resting in unison with the material being right.

Ch 14 - this has been a fun chapter with many more characters.
He discuss instruction manuals, highlighting a manual which begins “Assembly of a Japanese bicycle requires a great peace of mind”
This then leads to him discussing the act of assembly and building as an art, as often manuals are made with no care and are often written by someone who cares least about it. Often offering the most blunt way of assembly

Ch 13 -He argues that to be fanatical is to have doubt, if you know the sun will rise tomorrow you don’t scream it from the roof tops but if you are fanatical about sets of ideas etc there’s has to be doubt within you. There’s also the point of having the proper goal in place, take a priest serving his trustees and folk vs serving God, when these become contradictory the man doesn’t the com but keeps with God

CH 13, all about the church of reason. Points about how the university isn’t just a building it’s the philosophy/attitude one hold in using process of reason to uncover ever changing truth. The church example, a church is not the building but the people and ideas which make it.

Though he wants people to believe in this, he’s fanatical about it even, he has no belief himself.

First noticing of caring and attending I suppose, he notices all the cabins are made really well, and correctly presumes they were made by one man

Ch 12- this explores Phardeus past in India learning and studying, he’s not sure what he learned yet from these experiences. He notes that Hindus, toaist and Buddhist don’t care as much about the differences in the faiths compared to abrahamic religions.

He also notes the ‘thou art that’ a Hindu phrase explaining that there’s no difference between the self and what the self thinks they’re preceiving

Ch 11 - this in some way, deals with the issue of the scientific truth or an attempt to understand the objective world. Showing that there is a world which one can measure and reckon with

This eventually makes him angry, as it feels insufficient but wasn’t sure why this potentially was caused by his experience in the orient during the Korean war. I assumed the following chapter will attempt to explore that.

Ch 11 - this shows the phardues transition from science to philosophy. Highlighting firstly Hume, who argued for imperialism and that all knowledge comes from the senses. And there is nothing creating sensory data. Then he highlights Kant, who flipped this on his head adding the concept of a priori, things which exist regardless of the sensory data space and time. Which can account for causation and continuity
