holy fk. hearing first hand accounts of peoples’ families living through Chinese history is always so jarring for me. I feel guilty for not knowing more about my family’s history, but truthfully I know it’s trauma for my parents and grandparents.

I like his writing. The expose of the prologue was great.

oops I thought I had been logging this book. so fantastic so far. Making me feel some complex emotions. I normally don’t get through fiction easily but truly this is a page turner for me.

this book is fucking me up major

wow, some thought provoking writing about her experience working with injured service men/women. I think I share a similar lack of perspective with people who have served and their families that she shares. The passage about the man trying to salute her as the First Lady really struck me.

Think I have a better appreciation for my time growing up with the Obamas in office, and greater context for the policies they enacted. That said, I don’t think this book actually humanizes Barack Obama in the way I was expecting. Michelle I feel has been humanized, but I can’t seem to shake this perspective that Barack’s still on this pedestal. Idk maybe he actually is that fantastic.

Had a convo with my friend Chris a couple nights ago, and he helped me realize that I resonate with essayistic writing. I’m really enjoying these glimpses of her life.

lots to cover-

the section honoring her friend’s passing really calls you to be introspective, and fulfillment being a rich person’s conceit- how tragic that is. I’m seeing threads of parallelism with her parents’ mentality and my own. Really enjoying so far.

damn… where’s my Barack?

So good, so far. I can’t relate fully but I get glimpses of her life that I feel like I mirror. She writes about being someone who sought out validation from others, which drove her to achieve, about being scared to swerve and judging others for doing so. Hits hard right now as someone who just graduated form a prestigious college and in his first job.

picked it up again after some time. The narrative is captivating but writing sometimes is arduous.

Picked it up in Denver at a used book store, it’s been pretty interesting learning about this person’s many lives. He’s 22 right now and has seen so much.
