I find this style so startlingly, thoroughgoingly unpleasant to read that I am beginning to understand some of the etiology of what I loathe in contemporary American writing so thank you to Garielle Lutz for that x

“Coffee is to her what pork is to Jews.” was this stuff really necessary. I think it would be fine if we were a little more woke than that

“She watched a gaggle of perfect girls at a nearby table, somewhere between twenty-five years old and a very well-preserved thirty-two, speaking indecipherable syllables in high, liquid voices as the brittle bristles of their eyelashes cut the air and tunic hems swished around their stretchy leggings.” shut the fuck up

'It’s true, conglomerates took over publishing and changed how and what we read—and how and what writers write. But Schiffrin was still too resentful, too close to it, to see much other than avarice. This book defers judgment about whether conglomeration was good or bad in an effort to explain what it has meant for U.S. fiction and how we should read it.' — worthy exercise but I think it's fine to see avarice there

Very uneven so far. Almost gave up after a bit of Nell's perspective, which is an attempt to write a Young Person Who Spends A Lot Of Time On The Internet that doesn't ring remotely true — I'm interested now to see whether any writers of Enright's generation have been able to do this! Can't think of any examples! — and that lacks any particular redeeming beauty or clarity. But persevering for now.
