What strikes me most is the fact that she is an “accidental” defector- she never plotted to leave North Korea for good, but once she crossed into China, there was no going back. I can’t imagine how Earth shattering it must be to be told that everything that has been drilled into you since birth has been a lie. Her mental fortitude and determination is remarkable.

Already enjoying this collection even more than the first- there was something very satisfying about the piece criticising restaurant criticism, calling out racist/sexist/classist themes and culturally ignorant undertones. A few pages later I’m reading about taste development and baby food- and I’m still interested despite being childless and in most cases would never even glance at an article about baby food.
