“Missions is that activity of the church - in essence it is nothing else than an activity of Christ, exercised through the church - through which the church, in this interim period, calls the peoples of the earth to repentance and to faith in Christ, so that they may be made his disciples and through baptism be incorporated into the fellowship of those who await the coming of the kingdom” (Pg. 62).

Garfield was a true renaissance man: "A former professor of ancient languages, literature, and mathematics who had paid for his first year of college by working as a carpenter, Garfield’s interests and abilities were as deep as they were broad. In fact, so acute was his understanding of mathematics that he had recently written an original proof of the Pythagorean theorem during a free moment at the Capitol."

Piper's theology proclaims an exceptionally high view of the supremacy of God.

Ch. 3 - Supremacy of God in Missions through Suffering:
- one of the best single chapters on suffering I've read

Ch. 4 - Supremacy of Christ as the Conscious Focus of All Saving Faith
- There is an urgency to missions. A major change occurred in redemptive history with the coming of Christ, and all saving faith must be directed to him.

Piper is an incredibly structured and Biblically-rooted writer.

Ch. 1 - Supremacy or God in Missions through Prayer:
- Missions exists because worship doesn't; therefore, worship is the fuel and goal of missions.

Ch. 2 - Supremacy of God in Missions through Prayer:
- Life is war and prayer is the communication with headquarters by which the weapons of warfare are deployed according to the will of God.

This is a sad read.

A very engaging and compelling narrative
