My friend Leonard is using the word “Negro” a little too many times for a novel that has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Chapter 19 is saving this whole novel. I can tell this is Charlotte Brontë’s first book, and it is very interesting to see how she was trying to develop a good plot with a Gothic storyline while giving some deep understanding to her characters. She fails here, but eventually she masters it with Villette and Jane Eyre.

But what were you doing on the fifth of April 1868, or the second of November 1875, she would look vague and say that she could remember nothing. For all the dinners are cooked; the plates and cups washed; the children sent to school and gone out into the world.
Nothing remains of it all. All has vanished. No biography or history has a word to say about it.

I’m so surprised this novel was published after Jane Eyre and before Villette because it feels so different in terms of style, writing, and themes. I could easily imagine it being written by a completely different author. I loved the novel, but if you’re in love with the Gothic side of Charlotte Brontë’s writing, this one may not be for you.
