For an excuse to drag characters across the page, Proulx gives us what seems like a completely unappealing protagonist whose only skill seems to be an ability to listen to long-winded people go on and on about the quirky lives. While these characters are indeed fascinating, it's easy to imagine Proulx sitting with a tape recording in a Newfoundland cafe and transcribing the talk afterwords, complete with her murmurs.
