Incredibly strong start with some solid prose

This book is perplexing. I can’t tell if I like it or not.

I can definitely see the beginnings of Harrow’s writing style - it’s rougher here but still very present. I don’t love the back and forth between the characters since I want a straight through line (normally I don’t mind but I’m not loving it here for some reason), but the plot makes up for it.

I love the comphet and misogyny on display during Chiamaka’s internal dialogue about the way she views and uses relationships with men. It’s so viscerally queer in a way that you can only identify with when you’ve been there.

This book hides none of the brutality of what it’s critiquing and it somehow makes it harder to read for it.

It’s incredible how well Weir balances high stakes with hope. Too much of one and the stakes don’t feel high enough. Too much of the other and it’s naive.
