As well as writing a terrifying, supernatural novel about vampires, Stoker also penned an intriguing commentary on Victorian medicine & the advances society saw at the time. This use of juxtaposition between the familiar; the trustworthy, dependable modern day which original readers would have resonated with & the inexplicable, unnerving goings on creates a real sense of the uncanny which is so deliciously Gothic.
