I don’t know why I’m getting such a strong sense of nostalgia reading this type of book? I feel like I used to read historical books like this all the time, or books worded like this, and then I ended up switching over to more fantasy instead of historical fiction… But who knows?

(Either way, my brain hurts now, I need a break)

The poem before the last (not the unrequited love one, that one gives Milk&Honey vibes) is so beautiful oh my goodness

So far I don’t know if I like this quite as much as The Tradition by Jericho Brown, but it’s still pretty good so far!!!

that first poem was so good omg-

“i want to be a writer” was really good, and this one about watermelon seeds was good, but other than that these are reading more like songs than poems. And yes, songs can be poetry, but so far it just feels a little… off?

…you do realize that if you had only eluded to the other person being a moon and you being still water, then this would’ve been a much stronger poem than straight out telling us?

“i will welcome
a partner
who is my equal”

In the words of my coworker, “those are words that you wrote well done!” and I think that sums up half of these poems
