Re-reading this one for a book club, and it is even better the second time around and even better with comrades to discuss. Highly highly recommend to all

came across a free link to this book via Mariame Kaba and it’s amazing so far!
the 1st chapter is an excerpt from ā€œFull Spectrum Resistanceā€ about the history of the Deacons which were an armed self-defense guard originated bc lack of protection for Black people during the civil rights movement. the police used to protect KKK rallies & the KKK and police overlapped in membership so, s/o to the Deacons

really digging the way this reads like fiction even though it’s nonfiction. also gives a lot of emphasis on the ethical and social implications of genetics as the field emerged from its early days up until recently which I loooove to see scientists do

Although I’ve known my whole life about this journey, the DETAILS that Martinez goes into... damn. the writer/journalist rode on the trains alongside migrants to write this and he captured the constant fear and anxieties of migrating to El Norte. strength of this book is definitely the authenticity and diversity of their stories
