Read Madame Edwarda first, which is the middle story in the collection. Very moody and visual, but I often have no idea what Bataille's philosophical reflections are supposed to mean, or even if he has an idea himself. The "manifest content" of the story, in Freudian terms, is clear enough and interesting in its own right. And the basic thrust of the point - the similarity between God and the whore, is clear.
