I'm loving the way the line between the normal and the grotesque is becoming increasingly blurred for the characters. At what point does the macabre become the mundane?

Can a writing-style be lovely and exhausting all at the same time? I find myself equally enthralled by the turn of phrase as I am annoyed by the characters always seeming to be "on." Is this clever or "clever"?

I'm not an historian of the Italian Renaissance, but I'm going to posit that the following words are not exactly common to the period:

"ain't"
"country bumpkin"
"yummy"

Trudging along

I'm not especially squeamish, but whoa...

I find myself so delighted by the fact that there will be NO romance in this book. No mail order bride, no rich woman abandoned on "the trail," no feisty/snarky bar wench who just needs a man to understand her. Nope, just gritty, dirty, full of boils historical fiction.

I'm kind of confused by the cover image. The narrator is a man. Who is this woman holding these (awesome looking) old books?

I was hoping the other reviews were wrong, but this book is actually kind of boring.
