the priest that their fathers had known; the simple, unambitious figure who had pottered about the parish… whose occasional lapses from virtue were expected and condoned… he had been stolen from them, and in his place the Holy Father was sending them, in their dark hour, men of new light, equipped in every Continental art, armed against every frailry, bringing a new kind of intellect, new knowledge, new holiness.

“The Jesuits sought to present everything as having an immediate significance and intrinsic interest; they fostered competition and argument with the result that the driest grammatical questions became the subjects of hot debate.”

Got my juices going a little

“The teaching was counter-reformatory; in theology and exegesis they concentrated almost entirely upon controversial texts; in their spiritual exercises they were prepared for sacri-fice; they were being trained not as scholars and gentlemen, but as missionaries and martyrs.“

I cannot believe I’ve gone so long without reading a book with a feminist main character like Jane. I never anticipated that I’d enjoy it so much.

Starting audio booking… how could something that I thought to be wrong for so long feel so, so right?

Chapter 3 was TOUGH for me to read by itself. Pretty much no dialogue. Would hardly pick it up after a while and decided to audiobook the chapter while with Allie(my bicycle). Shows my illiteracy.
In a way, super beautiful passage to listen to though. Not a huge audiobook guy by and large, but there is something nice to this. 2nd half was lovely.

Goodreads is feeling a LOT like pre 2017 twitter with this word count.

“What is meant here by 'mystical light' is simply emotional experience, feelings of God's presence and the like. We must firmly maintain that these experiences, of themselves, have no spiritual significance. To seek and highly value 'experience, no matter how spiritual, is to choose a created reality instead of God, and ultimately self instead of God.”

This will either be the last update I post for this book because it went over my head and I put it down, or it’ll get a 5 star rating in a couple weeks.

We’ll see if I finish this one. Not loving it so far. Reasoning will come in review whenever I finish/put it down.

“If you are really so humbled as you sounded, you must learn to listen to sense. You're not quite the great Horse you had come to think, from living among poor dumb horses. Of course you were braver and cleverer than them. You could hardly help being that. It doesn't follow that you'll be anyone very special in Narnia. But as long as you know you're nobody special, you'll be a very decent sort of Horse”

Really glad I picked this back up. Brought the book to John’s Hopkins in March for my 5 days of laying down, but had no motivation to read. Was also near the end of a 50 page span where the crew had no interaction with other people so it felt dry to me. I’m past that now and I’m enjoying it.

Kinda paused this one while in the hospital. Really didn’t feel like reading at all while I was in the hole so lost my groove in the story.
