For a debut novel, Bengston’s tone and prose are clicking sooo right for me. Kind of have no idea what’s going on, but I’m here for a good time!

I don’t remember the last time a book pissed me off this badly. I don’t want to talk about it.

It’s not bad, but it’s not great. It’s a book and I am reading it (albeit a bit half-heartedly). Hmm.

I managed to pick a nonfic title that is both interesting AND will help me better at my job, which is unusual to say the least, but I am NOT complaining. Catch me spouting phosphorous phacts 24/7 for the phorseeable phuture.

okay. I will concede that They (y'know, the "they") were correct that it gets *better.* Not good, per se, but better. About the time that the [redacted] all [redacted] out of the [redacted] and start causing chaos in the [redacted]... it's a hot mess, but I am intrigued and shall continue.

Y’all had better not be lying about this one being good once it really starts popping off, because so far I am bored to tears and haunted by memories of this year’s earlier bottom-tier Dan Simmons and Scott Smith reads…

definitely expected more from this one.

Unfortunately very repetitive both in prose and in the sense that if you’re a woman with a health issue (especially a reproductive organ issue), there is nothing new here. Dozens of case studies of women who have experienced the same thing as you sandwiched between statistics you already know. Perhaps I was not the target audience for this book.

exquisite marriage of academic and poetic writing btw. I can pinpoint exactly which words were used over and over because they had to be, for the sake of accuracy, but I was also blown away by some of the lines in this text. goodness.

okay no but really, y’all have to read this. it’s introductory and perhaps more broad than deep, but it’s a masterpiece nonetheless.

not me wishing I had read this book before starting Lyx Robinson’s Wolves series because it makes things 100x clearer and 100x better… not me wanting to reread Stolen after spending a few dozen hours over the last week deep-diving into Viking history… AHHHHHHH

I thought this book would be better now that I’m older, but it’s really not. Is this more interesting to people who didn’t grow up in Houston, utterly steeped in the meteorological and social-cultural history of the 1900 Galveston Hurricane? Remains to be seen.

I've gotta level with y'all: the MMC in this book basically has the name of my old boss, and I just don't know if I can keep up with the combination of that and the subject matter (BDSM spice???!?! don't @ me)

anyway this isn't a BAD book and I really don't have triggers, per se, but I think I may have just found my first truly hard limit in literature: no characters who combine sex and the names of old coworkers.

Hm. It certainly is a book.

It's been 800 years...

I stopped updating my WTR shelf about 1500 books ago and now the gulf to completion is so wide that I think I've given up on keeping it reconciled with my library. I'm built different. Like, wrong, I think.

I'm struggling, y'all. I'm so sleepy. I was supposed to read 40 pages a night and finish this by the end of the month... which is today... oh no.

If I can manage to finish The Witching Hour before the end of July, I will consider it a success. Holy crap. I always forget how much more slowly I read Anne Rice than literally any other author except, perhaps, Nabokov. anne rice y u do this to me

Nobody could have prepared me for the utterly pathetic boredom that is Michael Curry in this book. He goes from the Most Interesting Man on Earth to a boring, drunken puddle of self-pity with a sprinkling of horniness for Rowan Mayfair and it’s… off-putting. Ugh. Men.
