honestly genuinely surprised i’m having minimal complaints about this book so far. i think it keeps up with its characters well with mallory visiting home & occasionally mentioning easton. i feel on the cusp of mallory and nolan banging so i’m interested to see how that’s handled given this is supposedly a YA book despite how explicit/causal it’s been so far. i’m actually looking forward to finishing this.

i think ali hazelwood’s style of drama works much better when the protagonists are 18/younger people. love stupid teens. i’ve just always struggled getting through the stupid adults who always supposedly have real life experience already and still act like that. i’m almost tired of hearing mallory whine “but i promised myself i wouldn’t play!!!!1!!!” and then have the same conversations with nolan abt it

read this maybe 7 or 8 years ago and i’m listening to it again. this is a great american novel. generational trauma, slavery, “freedom”, and a mother’s love. horrific and entrancing in a way that it’s hard to put it down yet i can’t help but be overwhelmed by the imagery at times. i love the supernatural elements. true american gothic

reading this off the shelf from my work during my downtime. did not know john green lived in orlando! i enjoyed reading this and hope i can continue later

DNFing since i haven’t picked it up & don’t feel compelled to finish it.

enchanting opening that unfortunately falls flat despite how beautifully written it is. i felt the characters were one dimensional and essentially copy pasted. i was bored by how everyone would just sit around drinking and smoking when there was nothing particularly profound about that.

i genuinely dislike this protagonist so much. she comes off as extremely immature and rude. i wish she was the steminist girl boss of my dreams but she’s not. she does nothing with her (misplaced) anger meanwhile levi apparently is the only one who can fix her problems by interfacing with the higher ups.

you’re telling me this woman has been at her job for one week and not done shit then gets mad when her boss is like “hey do work or your off the project”?? she had a couple dead end conversations which lasted all of a collective 10 minutes then has been doing ???? what else???? dreaming about murdering levi??

The group discusses that pain is our most unique experience one that will never be fully shared with anyone. but is this not the same for joy and love? we think our feelings of love are equally reciprocated yet how can we know for sure? we simply can’t. perhaps this focus on pain as a unique experience is perpetuated by our unwillingness to share it with others.
