Just finished the first chapter: Los Angeles. Super interesting so far, the woman has no name, her husband is husband, and kids are kids. I feel like the author did this on purpose since everyone ik who is married refers to their so as their husband or their wife. I figure that her husband speaks in $$$ bc he is the head of the household. In regards to her and her exes, the past lingers in the present

“She was assailed by countless worries - the most immediate of which was that the coffee… would be revolting. She felt she should be able to handle the taste of coffee. But what if it is really peppery? What if it is wasabi-flavoured coffee? How could I possibly drink an entire cup of that?”

Shiraha is unbearable. First, he says he’s looking for a wife and she needs to meet all his standards. She needs to be a good cook, a good clean, and have a decent job. As for him, he needs to lie low because he doesn’t want people to know what he’s up to and he doesn’t want to work (bc work = marriage = kids = work more for more money). Bruh he’s the definition of rb

“A convenience store is a forcibly normalized environment where foreign matter is immediately eliminated. The threatening atmosphere that had briefly permeated the store was swept away, and the customers again concentrated on buying their coffee and pastries as if nothing had happened” (60).

“When something was strange, everyone thought they had the right to come stomping in all over your life to figure out why. I found that arrogant and infuriating, not to mention a pain in the neck. Sometimes I even wanted to hit them with a shovel to shut them up…” (56)

“But as I got older, being so quiet apparently became a problem in itself. As far as I was concerned, though, keeping my mouth shut was the most sensible approach to getting by in life.” (10-11)

“But subsequently everyone started hooking up with society, either through employment or marriage, and I was the only one who hadn’t done either.” (36)
