2) It feels slightly out of place with the setting, which mars the impact a little.

It's been used a thousand times and it doesn't matter because it ALWAYS rules when the crazy old weirdo turns out to be the biggest badass alive

1) Not every book needs to be adapted into a show or movie
2) If this one is, this sequence could be a really fun montage

Book good so far

Everyone thinks Pratchett is funny and they're right but it gets glossed over that every now and again he spins out a page or two of some exquisite horror writing

GOD this book is so good

This author is allergic to putting any sort of thought into any of the "jokes" he writes. There's a fucking "dingos ate my baby" joke, including going out of the way to announce it's being said in a bad Australian accent.

Did this book have an editor? Who the fuck thought it was a good idea to keep the sentence "her breasts made a slight sloshing sound"? This book wasn't written, it was dictated by a drunk meathead frat boy.

What the fuck is the point of this.

Gleefully stupid, cruel, lazy, 4chan-ass sense of humor.

This book is going to have to start winning me over pretty fucking quickly.

Oh cute one character looks silly so another one made a "special needs" joke, fucking great. Most of these jokes haven't been funny but I had hoped we could just leave it at that instead of crossing over into actively repulsive.

Important reminder in this chapter that the Union soldiers were, alas, also really fucking racist, but after 90-odd pages of describing the antebellum South as what I will charitably call the most shit-headed and small-minded society imaginable the Yanks still come off as philosopher-kings in comparison

I had completely forgotten, or possibly never even known, just how much of the tension leading up the American Civil War was due to the slave states fearing, not that slavery would be abolished in existing states, but that it wouldn't be allowed in new ones, or that new states would vote on whether they wanted it, or even that the new states wouldn't be pro-slavery ENOUGH. Bonkers shit.

I'm burning out on this book, Ruocchio, you have to show me something original soon or I'm gone

The last 80 pages or so haven't been directly ripping off the Kingkiller Chronicle the way so much was previously in the book, but it IS clearly inspired by it and Ruocchio isn't doing enough to either hide that or to make it his own. You could tell me this section was from a sci-fi fanfic of Kvothe and Denna and I'd just be impressed at how close it matched Kvothe's voice.

Is that a 1984 reference? WHY?

Yeah man, I've read Dune, the Kingkiller Chronicle, and Book of the New Sun too.

Y'know, in IT, King gives a reason why people don't leave Derry, and that's on a generational cycle. This place has had...3 violent deaths within a week of each other, what I'll call a natural disaster with 7 *extremely gruesome* casualties, and multiple missing children within 8 months? Give me an explanation why no one seems to give a shit! Set the damn table!

Are you kidding me, we're getting a new core character 54% of the way into the book?

This book would have benefited SO MUCH from more table setting and build up. The things that are happening right now should be happening in the last 15-20% of the book, not just over the midpoint. And I sadly just don't have faith in the author's skill to properly escalate in a way that would work.

Either do interesting things with the typography or just leave it alone. This stuff doesn't cut it.

Pete's sake, let me go one full page where the author isn't showing off the most gruesome but beautiful but tragic but lovely sentence ever written. They keep trying and they haven't hit the mark once. It's exhausting to see someone try so hard.

This writing is like trying to fill a glass with a firehose.
