Pete's sake, let me go one full page where the author isn't showing off the most gruesome but beautiful but tragic but lovely sentence ever written. They keep trying and they haven't hit the mark once. It's exhausting to see someone try so hard.

This writing is like trying to fill a glass with a firehose.

Very much a young adult book. I can't tell if the writing is florid and overwrought because the main character is a teen figuring stuff out or because this is how the author writes.

The number and severity of page turn reveals in this single volume is incredible

They keep saying "empire" but I think the better word is "commonwealth", interpreted as idealistically, and ideologically, as you can.

Feels a little weird to hear a character say "magic" in a world that has magic but doesn't call it that.

Still better than "mano a mano" appearing in Grace of Kings. Man that book pissed me off.

Given the time and the author it's not a surprise, but it is honestly kind of funny just how much our boy John Carter suuuuuuucks

Holy shit

I only knew a little bit about this book before I started it, only Dorian Grey's ultimate end and the cost of his hedonism and selfishness. I never knew that he was set on that path by one of the truest devil characters I've ever seen. Lord Henry Wotton should be known as a greater monster than it feels like Dorian ever could be.

That Lord Harry thinks Dorian knows about Sibyl's suicide and is relieved to find him chipper and remorseless is the most damning thing about his character so far, and there was plenty of damnable material already

One and a quarter books into the series and now is the first mention of priests. I'd rather authors leave religion entirely out of their books if all they're going to do is present a thinly-veiled, poorly-considered half-reconstruction of the Catholic Church so there's an institution that can condemn things.
I'm probably (hopefully) getting ahead of myself.

Martin is so good at so many things but I only ever see people talking about killing characters, being mean, and sex. So much gets overlooked.

I understand why all the characters were aged up for the show and in many cases it would probably be better in the books as well, but Joffrey and Sansa both work so well as children.

I don't think I've ever read a series that managed to give omens the weight that Martin's portents have.

Miller may have gone off the deep end, and maybe was already pretty close to it when he was making this but hot damn, reading this book is like holding a power line. It crackles. It hisses.

God, this book.
