I’ve never read anything by DFW, and when I opened this book today, I truly had no idea what to expect. I just finished reading the first essay, “Big Red Son”, which recounts events at a pornography awards ceremony. Wallace opens it with a statistic about self-castration. Needless to say, I was immediately hooked.
