“It is obvious enough for the reader to conclude, ‘She loves young Emerson.’ A reader in Lucy’s place would not find it obvious. Life is easy to chronicle, but bewildering to practice, and we welcome ‘nerves’ or any other shibboleth that will clock our personal desire.”

omg finally an author who includes menstruation in a story!! you’d think periods would be a huge practical difficulty for female main characters in fantastical military schools more often, but this is the first time it’s legitimately referenced as a real barrier for the character and it’s very refreshing (not the only good part of this book but meaningful to me)

“‘Now, don’t be stupid over this. I don’t require you to fall in love with my boy, but I do think you might try to understand him… if you let yourself go I am sure you are sensible... Let yourself go. Pull out from the depths those thoughts that you do not understand, and spread them out in the sunlight and know the meaning of them. By understanding George you may learn to understand yourself.” pg 25

“‘My father has that effect on nearly everyone,’ he informed her. ‘He will try to be kind.’
‘I hope we all try,’ said she, smiling nervously.
‘Because we think it improves our characters. But he is kind to people because he loves them; and they find him out, and are offended, or frightened.’ pg 23

“When had Lily ever really felt, or pitied, or understood? All she wanted was the taste of new experiences. She seemed like some cruel creature experimenting in a laboratory… Lily, in the blaze of her own misery, was blinded to everything outside it.” page 173 & 175
