An interesting introduction to the glittering society of Wharton’s New York and characters so far.

So far, Emma is such a compelling character. An idealist; a dreamer.

Excited to get into this one.

This book just keeps getting more and more interesting.

Very engrossed.

Dumas definitely doesn’t waste any time creating an intricate story!!

Rather action filled, and humorous, so far.

So much melancholy, yet such a comfort to read.

Absolutely loving this so far.

So many profound quotes, moments. A deep and dark read.

Into Book 4.

A very compelling attack on society and a failing yet labyrinthine justice system thus far.

What a gritty and somewhat infuriating tale so far. I suppose a reader can only hope that Nekhlyudov’s guilty conscience is a powerful thing.

Many animal transformations, hypocritical gods and satirical commentary. That’s how I’d sum up the first 78 pages.

A rough and gritty beginning.

“Perhaps, then, I was too severe in my judgments, for I abhorred the sinner as well as the sin; now, I flatter myself I am more charitable and considerate; but am I not becoming more indifferent and insensate too? Fool that I was to dream that l had strength and purity enough to save myself and him!“

My heart aches for Helen.

Undertaking an academic read through and annotate of this one!

“..a girl's affections should never be won unsought. But when they are sought - when the citadel of the heart is fairly besieged, it is apt to surrender sooner than the owner is aware of, and often against her better judgment, and in opposition to all her preconceived ideas of what she could have loved..”

I’ve found myself totally immersed in this read. I feel like Gilbert, wanting to unlock the mystery of Helen.

“..It must be, either, that you think she is essentially so vicious, or so feeble-minded that she cannot withstand temptation, - and though she may be pure and innocent as long as she is kept in ignorance and restraint, yet, being destitute of real virtue, to teach her how to sin is at once! to make her a sinner, and the greater her knowledge, the wider her liberty, the deeper will be her depravity..”

An absolutely stunning book so far, with so many quotes that resonated- what an intimidating one to start, but a captivating one to read.

I’m incredibly immersed now, love Emma as a character and her interactions with Mr Knightly are always so fun to read.

A decent beginning. So far, I’d consider myself a bit intrigued by Emma’s attitude, her interactions are quite telling of her character and I can’t wait to see how I’ll feel about her by the end.

The girls are all growing up and going their separate ways, and yet, they are still so interconnected- and I feel for Beth so much.
