The first in this incredible series. Tawada takes language very seriously and somehow not seriously at all. I get anxious when exposed to intolerantideologies. I feel no better when asked to acknowledge the primacy of blood and soil. Tawada narrates an existence that allows us to live somewhere else where we each are composed of fragments and where there is a profound meaning to putting these pieces together.

It’s hard not to be carried away by Tawada’s infectious love of language in all its muddled misunderstandings. The sense of time in this series is playful and there’s a consistent suggestion that when we talk to each other differently, the sense of time we inhabit changes alongside it.
