While the story is good so far, Aveyard is doing some of the same annoying writing stylistic choices that Lauren Roberts does and I can’t help but find that a little… 🫣

Yet another case of YA authors shifting to adult but only upping the age of the characters and adding spice. Writing needs to adapt too and this, I’m sorry to say, is reading like an unconfident first-time YA writer. It’s been too edited; there’s a distinct lack of flow and it’s trying too hard to be overly flowery and metaphorical so it ends up choppy and stilted, with in your face foreshadowing.

Tessalyn, Luka, Axel, Tucker…. It makes so much sense that the author lives on a farmstead and homeschools her kids in North Dakota.

“He did notice her hatred for socks” girl yeah you threw a toddler tantrum and demanded flip flops what are we doing

“So, I won’t be allowed to eat doughnuts, fries, or pizza? And I have to wear socks and shoes?” Omfg ok 2016 Jennifer Lawrence we get it YOU’RE NOT LIKE OTHER GIRLS. I hate this book

Unsolicited writing advice: if you want to become a fantasy author that writes about immortal beings and you want to include a trial, do not write “every 50 years, every 10 years…” immortal beings would not measure time the same way a human would.

Solidifying that I much prefer a love story literary fiction over a romance, but it is also gnawing at me how much I really don’t enjoy first person POV. I don’t ever want to feel like the main character; I want to watch two interesting, complex main characters fall in love from my cuck chair. I am enjoying this, I just want more from the person whose head I’m stuck in.

This book is all tears. I just keep crying

Saying “this writing is delicious, I want to melt it over bread and devour it,” this early on into a book always gets me into trouble, but knock on wood, I’ll enjoy this.
