Anthony Ingram is on page 75 of 160 of When in Romans: An Invitation to Linger with the Gospel according to Paul (Theological Explorations for the Church Catholic)
The paragraph (pg. 48) is too long to quote in full but captured in this: “One of the challenges for the interpretation of biblical texts is that we are constrained by our predecessors so that we think largely in terms of the conventional questions our predecessors posed for the text…” Gaventa goes on to say that sometimes, we need to step back and ask different questions. Starting 2026 with an amazing book!

I checked this out at the library. But so far, this is a book I might have to buy. Very technical, but such good insights. Although I might disagree with some stuff, he raises good questions… chapter 2 asks, “what is ioudaismos?” And chapter 3 asks “Who actually believed “justification from works of the law”?” As no ancient document uses the phrase, besides 4QMMT (and Paul), but both use it differently

First half of the book - electric
Second half - unconvinced but Thiessen does do a good job challenging old views and making you think, which is always helpful
