I get it, it’s blunt writing style is meant to mic how fleeting life can be. Things come at you fast like the writing and a lot of it has nothing to do with anything plot or story wise.

“He’s a good dog, he hates drunks and Blacks and is not to crazy about Spanish really either.”

So far this book is about nothing but people hating babies and how mothers disassociate after miscarriages and with crying babies. But also a society or religion that believes people shouldn’t have babies. With a racist neighbor thrown in.

I don’t know, this book might just not be for me.

She’s so insufferable. Being so heavy handed in the writing I feel like I’m being beat over the head. Like I love the idea and the characters have potential. Why did I agree to buddy read the series. There are too many of them. I can only hope the writing gets better.

Why won’t she just let the priest tell the damn joke?

I really love this story but there is so much repetition in descriptions and dialogue tags with adjectives telling how a character is feeling. There is also so much repetition with elements of the story, it’s only a quarter of the way through, I get it.

I guess when a book explores themes of sexism and gender discrimination you should expect graphic SA in chapter 3.

It’s everything I wanted and more. Only solidifies RF Kuang as my favorite author.

I don’t understand the hype.

I have not seen one person speak on trigger warnings for this book that include CSA and incest. It’s not graphic. It’s not in the fairy tales within the book but still would have been nice to know.

I really wish I had content warnings before reading. But it did say there were horrific crimes of a serial killer.

The:CSA, murder of children, CSAM

There are certain times not using quotations works, this is not one of them and it feels so monotone. There is no rhythm.

This is really difficult to read with the current political climate. Too close to reality for comfort.

The Christian nationalists in the book who are antagonists have the salogan of help make America great again.

How is ash the opposite of honey?

It’s not about fixing capitalistic and colonial structures but reigniting indigenous ones.

Everyone old enough remembers where they were on 9/11.

Wilderness camps should be abolished.

Getting this far in, you’d think they’d have gotten to what the story is about. It’s taking a long time to give more context.

It’s absolutely heartbreaking knowing that First Nations teens could and can disappear only to be dismissed. One or 2 investigators for a region? That’s lack of funding and care from the Canadian government. Yet a white girl disappears and all the stops are pulled. Best not acknowledge a serial killer than admit Canada is corrupt and treats First Nations people as bad as the US.

Not to bring up the fan club only because he now suppected he’d become its president.
