‘Who are they? Why are they running? Can they be coming at me? And why? To kill me? Me whom everyone is so fond of?’ He remembered his mother´s love for him, and his family’s, and his friends’, and the enemy’s intention to kill seemed impossible. ‘ But perhaps they may do it?’

Humans have a tendency to deem their own death improbable and inconcevable as if they were special of some sort.

‘what I say is that if it were possible to know what is beyond death, none of us would be afraid of it.’
‘Afraid or not, you can’t escape it anyhow.’
‘All the same, one is afraid!
‘One is afraid of the unknown, that’s what it is. Whatever we may say about the soul going to the sky… we know there is no sky but only an atmosphere.’

Socrates wouldn’t let this through…

to be afraid of death is only another form of thinking that one is wise when one is not; it is to think that one knows what one does not know. No one knows with regard to death whether it is not really the greatest blessing that can happen to a man; but people dread it as though they were certain that it is the greatest evil…

'You are mistaken, my friend, if you think that a man who is worth anything ought to spend his time weighing up the prospects of life and death. He has only one thing to consider in performing any action; that is, whether he is acting justly or unjustly, like a good man or a bad one.

I wonder whether understanding Plato makes The Secret History clearer (as we know Henry’s devotes him). Particularly, may Euthyphro’s argument that murder is right, if it holds a reason, explain the dubious morality behind Henry’s actions?

Even if life is deprived of meaning, suicide continues to not be the wisest choice. But again, if life has in fact no meaning, who cares? I don’t see the point of merely giving up, but I remain incapable to surpass such pretense.
