The ups and downs of Bond's relationship with M is pretty interesting. M is a pretty hard, unsympathetic boss but even when they clash Bond usually later agrees that M's harshness was called for. Earlier, the book notes that in his relationships with women, he was irritated by any kind of demand; now we learn that with M he seems to crave that structure.

"He was genuinely shocked when his women were revealed as human beings." is a crazily succinct statement about misogyny coming from a dude in the 70s.

The last 10 pages have been entirely about a mission where James Bond had to hide on a freezing cold island and note German U-boat and ship movements so he can radio them back to London. He was miserable the whole time, got discovered really quickly, and didn't even get the most vital information back in time.
I'm really enjoying it.

I bought this out of curiosity but wasn't really expecting it to be good; with Bond's enduring status as a cultural power fantasy, it felt guaranteed to be one of those biographies where the writer is clearly too enamored with their subject to write about them objectively.
But he's somehow crushing it so far? 24 pages in and we are discussing how Bond's mommy issues manifested in the poor ways he treated women?

Books that make you understand the ways in which the history you're learning about is applicable to the present day are so fun to read. This author will NOT let you forget that the 1906 Earthquake and Hurricane Katrina showed the same pattern of authorities lying about victims' behavior and using that as a justification for inaction (at best) or brutality (at worst).

When Seth asks Dale "What will you do if Warren can't be cured?" and he says "I'll never know when that day has come, because I'll never stop trying." MAN...... Fablehaven was the only children's media I found that remotely touched on how to handle a loved one being in a coma, and I'll always appreciate that.

Fashion is something I've always struggled to understand, because it's often "vibes based", but so far this book is using a really analytical and systematic approach that I'm enjoying. It also has written assignments that force me to think pretty hard about describing and summarizing clothing/styles. It feels like work, but in a good way.

This book is so good, Dorian and Blue are both really compelling characters for different reasons. Can’t wait to see what happens to them and the other characters on the Cold Forge station.

I can’t focus on anything besides the Lord Ruler doing the cosmic equivalent of a Marx brothers bit where he tries to pick something up and knocks five more things over in the process

I know it’s a pretty common opinion that Prometheus and Alien: Covenant would be better movies if they weren’t tied to the Alien franchise, but I think we also have to consider the possibility that they might be better as books?
Both stories deal with some pretty abstract and esoteric themes that are just difficult to parse onscreen, but (at least for Covenant) really come alive when described in words.

Love that the book specifies they check for airborne pathogens before venturing outside without helmets… Still would’ve kept mine on though. Just in case.

Tom Taylorson is such a good narrator, you can really tell he’s a professional voice actor. Not only does he make the characters’ voices distinct without being cartoonish, he always infuses them with the right amount of emotion for the situation. It almost feels more like a one man audio drama.
