George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire is basically Ivanhoe but with Dragons, less chivalry, more debauchery, and the touch of a perverted nerd.

My eyelids feel ever so heavy

Very curious to see where this will go, so many loose threads.

We are not doomed. There is still hope. As hate begets hate, love begets love. The choice is ours. We may escape the cycles we've inherited, we may be the masters of our destinies.

This book just keeps getting better and better. Life is beautiful and so is the human race.

I can't put my finger on why exactly, but I'm really enjoying this. The lack of a clear plot 160 pages into any other book would likely piss me off, but here I just feel so swept up. It feels like such a loving portrait of the totality of the human experience: love, hatred, jealousy, greed, generosity, hope, despair, callousness, tenderness.

Every character, every vignette is just so unmistakably human.

This book has taken way too long to get good, but here we are, this is actually riveting now.

I really loved The Road, I really loved No Country for Old Men, but this book is just testing my patience. No apparent thread holding the plot together, just a band of mercenaries going from town to town slaughtering Mexicans and Native Americans alike. I really don't understand why this book is held up as McCarthy's great masterpiece. It seems quite evident that his later works show immense growth for his writing.

This is simply brilliant

Really enjoying this so far, much funnier than I might have expected. Also I don't believe to have ever read a description of the English landscape which so perfectly captures what makes it so beautiful.

If Burke is the father of modern conservatism, I understand why conservatives are so badly read when their foundational text is this tedious.

Imagine sending your friend a 300 page letter about politics...

I think this is the first history book I've picked up where it does feel like it's aimed at Gen Z

Maybe I have chosen to do something worthwhile with my life by dedicating it to the study of history.
