I'll be surprised if I make it through much more of this. Where previous books by SR have featured pretentious characters but been written really nicely, this just feels like really pretentious writing with flat, boring characters. It feels more like it's about writing a pseudo-intellectual book than it is about having a plot...

Look, I totally understand that this is set in Japan, where objectively the average high of women is about 5'2" and they're mostly a very healthy nation. But the fact that I have now read them call someone who is 70kg (coincidentally, the exact weight I am) fat, overweight, massive, and therefore unloveable is really quite jarring.

At the start the narrator's voice was fun and stark. Now that the story is BARELY moving it's getting kind of grating.
