the chapter on women was vindicating

some decent pages that were enjoyable to read but yeah for the most part theres a lot of contradictions and methodological inconsistencies that calls into question how muslim progressives aim to gain any authority when it comes to challenging supposedly misogynistic quranic verses and hadiths

there were some points i agreed with but so far this book is literally the epitome of everything muslim feminists/progressives, and this too means their flaws are regurgitated

very informative and pretty eye-opening so far, it's starting to get much more academic-heavy though

only on the first story and it lowkey pulled my heartstrings 😭

this book is brilliant i learned a lot from it, i cant believe classical exegetes directly ignored at-tabari's egalitarian reading for 2:228 in favour of their own misogynistic ones even though they literally cited from him

just finished chapter 4 "neglectful husbands", interesting and eye-opening stuff esp in regards to ibn ashur
