At the halfway point reading biographies and people’s opinions on James Allen. Very contradictory. I have loved this book so far, and others describe it as cafeteria Christianity, or Buddhist, or “too Christian to be any good.” He is seen as outdated by some, and his books are praised as great “self-help” works by others. He’s associated with the “New Thought” movement, but I think he would hate it.

Convicting, especially in its portions that discuss animal indulgence, men’s lower inclinations, and the contrasting tendencies of a life lived “like a man,” “looking ever towards his ideal.”

So far, the “rebel” part is smoking (in the 60s), speeding one time, and listening to Johnny Cash—
meanwhile his “daddy” introduces him to presidents and he’s flying on private planes to go hunting between a rich friend’s different ranches during the summers… the cause is TBD.
