On page 40 and I’ve already witnessed a plethora of misreadings from these guys—not culturally, just as far as reading comprehension goes. Immediately disappointing book.

Immediately loving it. His writing style is primed for the screen—I’m amazed there hasn’t been a successful movie.

Fascinating to read this right after the little book “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse.” McCarthy’s dialogue style is identical to Mackesy’s, and the plot line is similarly aimless over incredible scenes with simple, heartfelt characters. Only, obviously, one is appropriate for all ages, and the other isn’t appropriate for any age.

At the halfway point reading biographies and people’s opinions on James Allen. Very contradictory. I have loved this book so far, and others describe it as cafeteria Christianity, or Buddhist, or “too Christian to be any good.” He is seen as outdated by some, and his books are praised as great “self-help” works by others. He’s associated with the “New Thought” movement, but I think he would hate it.

Convicting, especially in its portions that discuss animal indulgence, men’s lower inclinations, and the contrasting tendencies of a life lived “like a man,” “looking ever towards his ideal.”
