"Self-ambulation detected,” says the computer. “What’s your name?”
“I am Emperor Comatose. Kneel before me.”
“Incorrect.”

If everybody told Poirot everything, why hasn't he even CHECKED the secret door area for any evidence??? ahhhhhhhh

Genuinely, so frustrated.

Trying to get back into this; it's been a while 😭

This book is very encouraging though. Also it's nice bc it has an appendix of external books to refer to, either for apologetics, classical theology works, or touching on topics like inerrancy of Scripture or studying and interpreting the Bible, etc.

Much respect to the author thus far for that.

I have to stop and just say, the *audacity* of Brad. (Of course it's a Brad!)
This is a neurosurgeon. More years than you, more education than you. You're also being told your boss has given him this medication.

But no, because it added another step to your obligation checklist, you were nasty.

I wasn't expecting such a hatred to obligation, even to a neurosurgeon patient. That's so messed up on many levels.

I hate that I can't tell if Parker is insincere or not. I know the writing style is somewhat different, so idk if it's intentional or not (i.e., an intentional red herring or intentional to his character), either. He just sounds so fake and suspicious 😭

"Those burdens are what make medicine holy and wholly impossible: in taking up another’s cross, one must sometimes get crushed by the weight."

And earlier:
"informed consent ... became not a juridical exercise in naming all the risks as quickly as possible ... but an opportunity to forge a covenant ... : Here we are together, and here are the ways through—I promise to guide you, as best as I can, to the other side."

So far:
I love that, in a school district with least interest in educating, his mom provided the best education possible on her own dime for Paul. Pushed the school to want education.
Also, love seeing the mere effects on a person who is well-read.
But this is also rough. Lots of medical jargon, graphic surgical/med. descriptions, etc. Paul does say that the Q of meaning often starts in medical environment.
It shows.

(Quote from the book)
[Context: MC asking a character about enjoying "out of date reads," to which he finds out that she does.]
'I was rather pleased to hear it. The things young women read nowadays and profess to enjoy positively frighten me.'

Oh boy, doesn't it frighten us all 😂😂

I might see what people say when they say modern writing hand-feeds their readers. 😭 I kind of liked not being able to tell who was on what side and stuff, but like, when you shift POV to the antagonist and we learn who he's working with and who he's not...
Idk, just disappointed 😭

I think at first I was feeling "meh" about the book just since it didn't start in a writing style I'm familiar with (and 'They Came From the Ocean' did at first), but I'm rather enjoying it so far now that I'm focusing on it when I need a break from the horror. It's interesting having to try piece together what happened between MC and his best friend that turned him into an enemy and got MC put into prison.

Okay, this is a much better horror and I'm glad I chose this for my next horror read. I'm not that far in and I've already been unsettled or on edge in general. The prose is written really nicely imo, and there's enough detail to get ideas without having the story hand-fed. You get ideas of what's happening but still left questioning if there's more to what you're reading, or if you're reading red herrings. Love it.

Although I'm reading this like 1-1.5 chapters at a time, I must say that while this isn't my favorite writing style ever, it's rather intriguing. I think it's also a nice break from fantasy while I'm also able to learn small snippet ideas and things to consider for my own book. So, having fun.

Tbh, for a story centered around a character that isn't my favorite (she's not bad! Just not my fave to follow - tho she's earning my awe. I love characters designed around unity and I love how Brandon has used her merchant background to "meet others at their needs, not seeing how our needs can be met." Ugh love it.)
Sorry - to pick up where I was, this has had me on the edge haha. The interventions, the suspicion!

Mid reading note:
This scene is literally making the most foolish, unrealistic argument you can, but rolling a nat 20 and your DM rolls a 2 😂😭😭 I love it but I absolutely hate it all the same. Like how??? Literally.
OR, alternatively, a character with high charisma finally rolls a 2, and your DM is just sitting there sad-frown-pouting because he rolled a nat 1. 💀💀
