So . . . Don't like the mother. I get that she has trauma, I get that's she's convinced Bird isn't her son, I get that her personality and Bird's don't interact very well, I get that her job sucks. I get all those things, and I get that I'm early on in the book. But she's treating Bird terribly. She picks on him, and guilts him, and is a smart ass with him and he's a child. It's not good parenting, at all.

I'm not sure how to feel about this book. On one hand, it's one of the most beautifully written books I've read. The writing itself is beautiful. The subject matter of this book, however, is so deeply depressing at its core that it's making it very hard to read.
