So the eruption of Vesuvius inspired the apocalypse in the book of revelations? Makes sense

Way easier reading than I expected. I see why these pulpy page turners were so widely loved and adapted. They rely on simple stock characters, but this is only so the intricate plot can shine through and be understood.

Left me with many questions, but I suppose that's the point...

I don't know why I was hesitant to read this, as if Hiaasen ever does me wrong. I already loved the character of Twilly so it's great to see him again. And the idea of him going undercover in a white supremacist group to fuck with them? Oh, god, yes. Hiaasen makes clear how he views the alt-right: incompetent and silly.

Just brilliant. Gorgeous. I love Gillian Flynn.

This is almost up there with Gone Girl for me so far. Camille is fascinating. Flynn is so gifted.

Realizing this whole book could be a White Lotus plotline. Rich people on vacation in a foreign place, satire on wealth and privilege, affairs, mental illness, and of course, people getting shot.

Isn't it crazy how little humans change? A hundred years ago, people were still having parties that sound like my freshman year of college to me.

Oh I am having so much fun. It's delightful seeing a female character from 200 years ago whose main positive attribute is her intelligence. Everyone around her is like yep Emma is a beautiful genius queen and we all respect her as de facto head of her household. Mr. Knightley, you don't fool me.

Asimov has such a talent for writing the most bland characters amongst some of the best world-building I've ever read.

I'm shocked at how much this book has grown on me. Very charming and original for what could be a standard Hallmark movie plot.
