“The grapes were the small fat variety…When you squeezed them the entire contents, soft and seedless, shot into your mouth, leaving the flaccid skin between your finger and thumb.”

Very vivid grape-writing, there. Not at all evocative of anything else.

“That morning, I got maybe an eighth of a cup, which turned out to be the high-milk mark…Most other days, I got no more than a couple of tablespoons.”

Is this a glass half-full/half-empty joke? Any good baker knows 1/8 cup =2 tablespoons

I don’t know if the brilliant writing is going to be enough to get me through this emotional roller coaster. The drops are too steep for me.

“Dante had an irrational thought that the doctors and nurses had talked about him after they’d seen him up and found him pathetic and irritating.”

Dante, this thought is not irrational. I wish I could find these fictional doctors & nurses so I could hop right in the conversation.

And I know Cosby is going to make me regret these words, which is why I love him so much.

Becky Hunter is on page 229 of 320 of The True Happiness Company: How a Girl Like Me Falls for a Cult Like That
“You might think people have some built-in instinct for survival, that they will fight against death, but not babies, not this little. They are born into life briefly, but life has not yet been fully born into them. They can slip out of your hands and into death easily, like slick bars of soap.”

I’ve never seen better writing about the parenting of unwell newborns. Hard not to have flashbacks of my firstborn.

Just reading the fly leaf, pretty funny that this library hold came in right after These Burning Stars. Two books using the same plot device to vastly different ends.

Not sure if reading this is good for my mental health. Especially the chapters from Esek’s point of view—her sociopathy is occasionally entertaining, but mostly I find it just depressing. We have so many sociopaths in power right now that maybe it just isn’t as much fun to read about powerful sociopaths in fictional universes as it used to be.

Having a suspension-of-disbelief issue. Not that academics wouldn’t do unethical things—I’m sure it happens every day—but that this particular professor seems so oblivious to the level of unethical research she’s conducting here. What she considers borderline ethical is clearly way past that line, even with just a minimal exposure to IRRB standards.

At this point, whether this ends up a 3-star review or a 5-star review all hinges on the ending. I’m praying Axel lands it solidly.

It’s tempting to rush right on through to the end, especially now that I’m only having to look up a few words per chapter, but I need this to last until I can get my hands on the Swedish edition of Backman’s latest.

“Millie Cousins was born in Joplin, Missouri, in 1993.”

So, if my first thought is, “Oh, she’s the same age as all of my favorite Finns in Eurovision!” I might have a Finnish Eurovision problem, right?

(For the record: Erika Vikman, KAJ, and Kaarija were all born in 1993. Glad to get that trivia out there.)

Another satisfying sentence to read from the future, regarding Sweden: “Det förlovade landet, populärkulturens vagga för varje österbottning.” (“The promised land, cradle of popular culture for every Ostrobothnian.”)
