Alright, the tangents have stopped, the chapters have reduced to a reasonable number of pages, and the drama is turning up. I’m locked in now

1. Okay vocals!

2. There’s a pattern in this writing style: the story is cued up, American history is invoked to give context, the story concludes, and a lesson-learned is shared. Idk why this stands out to me; maybe because I’m new to memoirs so it’s interesting to see how different people approach them. I’ve never read a memoir that discusses so much objective American history.

I really want to get into this but these first couple chapters feel insanely long for my “winter break” brain
