What an oddly horny book

There’s like an editors note that’s half a page long that is like “TO BE CLEAR: Spock and Kirk are NOT gay lovers. People ask them about it all the time but they’re NOT in love. Kirk likes WOMEN. Spock likes LOGIC.” Like ok thanks for clearing that up Gene

Starting this book as a way to decompress, because the last few books I’ve read have been monumental tomes that span years and years of American history. I’d like to tackle something that’s light and fun.

I literally cannot wrap my head around the scope of this book sometimes. The way Wright dedicates pages upon pages to hundreds of different atrocities and scandals and horrible behavior by the church in such a matter-of-fact way is astounding. It is impossible to be impartial.

Got to the portion where they detail the trouble production of Paul Haggis’ “Crash”, and can’t help but think “damn. I kinda wish they had just never gotten the movie made.”

Somebody needs to make a movie about Sylvia “Spanky” Taylor’s experiences. Absolutely horrific.

I am genuinely having a hard time believing that what I’m reading is anything more than an amazing fiction. How did anyone ever listen to this man and come away with the idea that he was anything more than a raving lunatic and egomaniac????

My fascination with Hubbard has turned into a complete disgust. He was truly a horrific man who lied to everyone, manipulated thousands, and physically and psychologically abused his spouses. I can only imagine I will grow to loathe the man more and more as I continue through the book.

L. Ron Hubbard was a fucking nut job

Over the course of about 4 pages (pages 508-513), Bugliosi details Manson speaking to the court and the attorneys present for his trial. He rants and raves about his innocence, and screams about his philosophy, grasping at every straw imaginable. I found some footage of this speech online. He truly was such an interesting, terrifying, insane man.

I’m beginning to think that Charlie Manson was not a mentally well-adjusted person.
