I'm enjoying a re-read of this novel (read 30 years ago). Bronte envisions an industrial, independent woman of her time (actually, the novel is set right before her birth, but in her Yorkshire environs) if such a bright woman had means and social acceptance to fulfill her ambitions in a man's world.

The narrator argues for feminism. In margins of chapter 22, "Two Lives," I'm scribbling, "Preach it, sister!"

Read 2/3 of it in one day. It's the best story I've read in a long time. Wish I could keep reading, but I have to go to sleep!

Lovely. The sections narrated by the fig tree lend such an interesting perspective. If the same opinions had been expressed by one of the human characters, they might have come across as preachy or judgmental, but from the tree, they feel gentle and wise. The audiobook was narrated beautifully.

I love listening to this audiobook and enjoy the praise songs for various creatures and aspects of nature. But I am turned off occasionally by the judginess of the author toward her neighbors and others who are not as enlightened as she. It makes me tire of the book more swiftly. I want her to be as generous to her fellow humans as she is to the creatures in her yard. Overall, though, I am enjoying the book.

Lol, this guy is a piece of work. Breitwieser sounds audacious and pretentious, but what a strange way of seeing the world--his attitude of entitlement is astonishing. I'm listening to this as an audiobook, and I keep shaking my head in disbelief. I'm annoyed that I am so intrigued by his story.
