the line drawings in pen & ink have been an unexpected treat & It does make me appreciate emerson more

This is a terrific book so far - a trustworthy horse makes for a unique and readable first person narrator for a complicated story of conquest told with nuance and careful attention to indigenous, historical & natural details

i picked this out for my christmas read on a whim and it is a treasure,a time capsule, an indulgence because so well written as to be no effort at all in the reading thus far - exceeding all my expectations

this is a fun read so far !

enjoying this more than I expected - we’ll never (?) know Anning’s inner world, but this imagining of it is one way to send your mind back to her time, her place, her people, and the extraordinary way she came to know the world through the curiosities of Lyme Regis

the end of this book of tales just drags compared to the beginning!

the premise sounds exciting and the main character should be easy to feel interest and sympathy in, but the interruptive narrative voice kinda slows things down - as an audio book well acted.

loved the way i rollickeed along reading this til I bogged down in the monopod’s tale, the ups and downs of the second griffin and the anchorite’s weirdness. please let this pick back up from 33rpm

it’s derivative but it’s got me turning the pages anyway . . .

laugh out loud, smile inside, sigh at the unjust truths and common failings <spoiler> and oh yes, in this recent chapter, poop, vomit and one long flight of stairs to a small enclosed room </spoiler>

Anne Lamott is great on audio - what a gift her voice is .

the relentlessness of this chronicle is so familiar to the female reader yet it’s more important than ever not to look away

i’m at chapter 28 out of 64 and the time bendy / perspective twisting way things get revealed in this dangerous world of prejudice, discovery and violence just got more complicated

The narration of this audio book keeps me listening

these stories will undo you and challenge you and occupy you while at the same time make you ask "what just happened"? !

This book is too clever for its own good and a rollicking good literary time in the most morbid place imaginable (maybe ? maybe not?) I had a blast with these characters but fair warning about their group therapy sessions !

It started a couple weeks ago when I read Planetfall and it’s getting to be a stronger feeling with each book - I really enjoy turning the pages of these stories, of seeing worlds through Newman’s characters. i’m starting to get pissy when people interrupt me when I’m immersed in these stories, yes they’re that easy to fall into !

Read Powers' The Moral Clarity of ‘Slaughterhouse-Five’ at 50 essay in NYT & knew it was past time I read Yellow Birds - I was right but that doesn't make it easy bcs turns you inside out

So close to a dnf for me . . . But haven't deleted it yet - should I' keep reading?
