The book seems to me held back significantly by the fact that Ellis seems to think Jefferson, the Founders perhaps at large, and really any human being to be absolute dunces and madmen. In between that though he writes well and brings up some interesting questions. I had hoped this would be the David McCullough’s John Adams of Thomas Jefferson, but it isn’t.

It is interesting to see who an author thinks the ideal detective is, the man who really knows what life is about. For Klavan, the ideal detective is a professor of gothic English literature.
