I feel so intelligent being able to understand whatever tf this character is talking about as if he’s not literally walking me through every tiny detail step by step

Never have I been so utterly horrified by what I’ve been read. Not scared. Horrified. Disgusted and distraught and what I knew was about to transpire. Never have I wanted to beg and plead alongside the character in a novel. Annie terrifies both Paul and the reader. She was always crazy, only when her past is revealed we realize how dangerous she is. And that was where the real horror hidden. Not her axe, just her.

“God’s got a couple of broken legs and he’s in my house and eating my food.”

“Wisdom does not choose sides. It simply is.” This chapter does a much better job of slowly showing the confusing changes in Joth’s psyche. Not only is he struggling to understand The People but he’s also comparing his old life and what he likes and dislikes. The last chapter wasn’t gradual at all, but this one was.

Chapter 6 feels like a hard dramatic switch in Joth’s moral perspective. The chapter begins us being told “he doesn’t see them as savage anymore”. I feel like this change needs to be a little more gradual and happen overtime. The audience is already in the know that the People aren’t savage or evil, but Joth doesn’t. It feels like a big leap that happens off screen through telling and not showing.

Going good so far! I wasn’t a big fan of the “1 month earlier” framing device, but I’m invested in both of our leads after chapter 3 so I’m excited to see where it goes!
