I'm pretty convinced much of the use of "brothers" in the edition I'm reading is a misunderstanding: the otherwise masculine term "hermanos" can also be used to mean "siblings," under grammar rules I won't try to fit here. Given the layers of translation, I can understand how+why it became "brothers," but she's otherwise very clear that her sisters, also, were/are activists alongside her.

Actually started this some weeks ago. I thought it'd be interesting -- Baker was a very interesting figure -- but I've been slogging through it. The art & writing overly sexualizes, infantilizes, and otherwise charicatures Black individuals, including Baker herself, constantly playing into racist & revisionist stereotypes. Was this ever shown to a single sensitivity reader?

Walking into the audiobook without looking at who the narrator is was a fucking WILD moment to experience
Anyway me reading this is long overdue and these kids are destroying my heart

Something lighter to recharge my brain
Constantly astounded by how much I've forgotten since reading this series way back in middle school

A lot more academic than I was expecting, but I'm not upset about that. It's very interesting.

I'm eager to get into the disc that accompanies this. The only problem is finding a way to run it on a computer 15 years in the future of what it's programmed for, without paying for a software that seems pretty defunct otherwise.
