to my fellow californians in the chat, give this a read it’s so worth it, even if non fic isn’t your thing the story telling is very well written

this will only make sense if you live inside my brain but the feeling I get reading this book is how I imagine a vial of the reflection of neon traffic lights glowing in puddles on a rainy night would feel being injected into my veins; I can’t put it into words otherwise but i’m buzzing with a restless and uncontainable energy. thank you tristen for badgering me about reading this

i have been waiting to start this book for weeks!!! i'm excited

Making me depressed in a slow, draining emotions, unpleasant way. Not in a makes me feel strongly/question things kind of way but in a makes me stop feeling way. So far, I don't find the characters well developed (haven't given up hope), there's a way to do the whole morally gray/deprived, nihilist character thing well, with umpf, but imo the mark was missed on this one. hoping the second half changes my mind :/

About halfway through! I love Ivan and Alyosha is so very precious, though Mitya is hard to dislike despite—well yk. So far I’m giving 4 stars for that one chapter about the elder that was sooo long (had a hard time finding the purpose for it) but I’m hoping the second half makes up for it it cause I’ve already cried a few times and grown emotionally attached to multiple characters

Put this one down a little while back and having a hard time wanting to pick it back up over other books...

Been reading this book on and off for ~1 year now. The problem is that every time there's a high, I know there will be an even lower low, so I stop myself right before then, knowing Zola's lows consist of throughly detailed and drawn out vivid prose to suck you into the character's emotions, and sometimes, I just don't have it in me. Because of that, though, it makes picking the book back up that much harder...
