Would this book be well received today? Probably not… at least not in trad published romance… the “mistakes” of the MC in a true 2014 fashion are pretty bad… not to mention his casual thoughts of DV…

Teenage me would have loved the angst in this.

I wish I had read this before reading the Institute. They are definitely sister (or cousin) books, and I feel like the actual facility part of the story was so much more elaborate in The Institute, so it is making Firestarter fall flat in a way. Not the books fault. I'm the problem. It's me.

I don't believe that these characters weren't originally meant to be teens and then she aged up the story to be NHL... If there are adults out there that act like this, I hope to never meet them.

The dialogue is so bad... Helena Hunting is definitely trying (and failing) to write a quirky narrator. Quirky girls collect things, they don't use weird language to describe adult situations. Also, the fact that her parents are rich and have a pool house that she is living in, and her whole personality is being broke... like really?

This reads very Wattpad. Which isn't a problem for me, but an interesting choice for trad publishing.
