Another epic from Dickens. Laughing a lot, although sometimes I’m not sure if I’m laughing with the characters or at them. Copperfield is so woefully sincere and blinded by love; Dora is such a pathetic human; and Uriah Heep (arguably the best name for a villain in the history of literature?) is comically “humble.” Still, I find I can’t put the book down. Dickens at the height of his powers.

quite lovely. reminds me of spoon river anthology.

Not what I expected. Much more about the exceedingly complex process of mounting an operation (in the 70’s, in Africa) than an actual shoot ‘em up. Even a little tedious at times, unless you dig finance. But I suppose that’s the point of the the book - mercenaries existed for no other reason than to line the pockets of western capitalists, and the guns were just one tool for plunder.

Good story, well paced, about a forgotten era.
