They looked Chinese, but not Chinese Chi-nese. You could tell from the summer tans, the ruddy cheeks, the sun-browned hair. Chinese Americans always looked like Chinese people put through a broiler.

First official buddy read with @Hannaaaa 🙌🏽🙌🏽

I was going through the book for the sake of a literary analysis essay I was doing but couldn’t help myself and just started reread the whole thing for the millionth time 🥰

okay we’re picking up the pace a bit 🙏🏽🙂‍↕️

"That's not what I'm worried about. My sister, what if she's out here looking for us?"
"Then I hope someone tells her the sun's abour to come up."
"You really don't care about her at all, do you?"
"If I didn't care, then I wouldn't hope someone has told her it's almost sunup."

i giggled

buddy reading with @halima

"It has vital points, like the human body... Like your arm." Mamoru looked back at her in utter confusion. "What"
"Come," Takeru grabbed the front of Mamoru's kimono in his left hand and hauled him out the door. "Your mother is talking nonsense.”

genuinely frick him

@Yusra this better be gooddddd

until now i thought the main character was a guy 💀

i’m still shocked i got the arc for this

"Her friends didn't really like me, and we
just fell apart."
Amal makes an annoyed sound. "Okay, I hate her."
I laugh.

amal is me to my sisters lol

my heart just stopped

zoulfa is literally THE writer of this generation. this book is so healing and idk if I can stand it

yusra and hanna, if u see this, u should read it too 🫶🏽

I'm letting my gut take the lead with this.

alhamdulillah she has a backbone 🙏🏽🙏🏽

”Just be—" She stops, taking in a deep breath.
"Be what?"
She sighs. "I don't know. A bit nicer?"

murder is on the table, yes 🤗

I remember because I gather kindness like precious stones. Because friendship doesn't come easily to me, and all I can do is hope to be noticed.

hayati ☹️

"You would marry for something as mundane
as love?"
"Mundane? Love is the closest thing to the heavens."

"And they don't get that film is a totally different medium, and requires different storytelling skills," says Justin. "It's a translation, really. And translation across mediums is inherently unfaithful to some extent. Roland Barthes. An act of translation is an act of betrayal."

Ah to read Babel again for the first time

For the first time since I submitted the manuscript, I feel a deep wash of shame.

WA AKHEERAN. OH MY GOD SHE PISSES ME OFF SO MUCH THIS STUPID STUPID STUPID BLOODY IDIOT

i’ve never felt this level of hate towards a character this earlier on oh my days i want to kill her

i think i may be getting cured of my slump....

“I know a really good spot—prepare to be amazed."
"I’m never amazed." he says

uh huh

“I suppose murder isn't an option,” Alice says in a contemplative voice.
Henry and I stare at her.
“What? I said it isn't an option," she says, throwing her hands up. “Not the easiest one, anyway," she adds.

I missed this girl sm 😭😭

”She's still my daughter. My little Ilyanna. It doesn't change anything if she goes to live in her husband's home, she will always have a place in her father's house. If I catch you boys talking like this about this bedroom again, I'll re-acquaint you with the leather belt.”

welp, excuse while i go cry in a corner and restate that I’ll never get married 🥹

ok i think the pace i’m reading at is saying a lot already but HELL NO

this is not what i mean when i said wanted historical romantasy
