I’m reading this book so slowly bc I’m really trying to savor it, Mr snicket is literally inside my brain this might be one of my fav little stories of the whole year

“Telling yourself that something does not matter is one of the loneliest things you can do, because you only say it, of course, about things that matter very much. But often, and this is the lonely part, they only matter to you.”

Learned about:
• the philosophy that something created nothing for everything/something to come from aka Tzimtzum (like how clear thoughts come from an empty mind)
• Sinnerman by Nina Simone

Fun quote: “God made everything out of nothing, but the nothingness shows through.”

I love Lemony Snicket

I love the way he describes loving water. Especially comparing the water in the sun to “all a case of knives”

I love his little paradoxes and his musings on journeys and apologies. Especially,

“Every single thing I ought to have apologized for, and didn’t, is like a book lying open and unfinished.”

and he’s so right

So I am now legitimately unsettled bc why the actual f is Eleanor already starting to turn inwards and blame Theodora for what’s going on. The ghost is literally going to demolish her she’s too vulnerable from her history w her mother.

This book has devolved into straight poetry and I don’t get it rahhhh. I get that it’s about addiction and American society and tragedy informing art… I think??

Already cried a lot reading this, will be crying more

this book genuinely seems like an infinite metaphor and i’m obsessed with it. i could genuinely write an essay on this book and im like a third of the way through

Very much enjoying IWHNKM. The author’s background of escaping the holocaust and being a psychoanalyst makes total sense
