She is definitely not a historian, and tends to lump different historical groups together (Puritans/other Colonials) and all white evangelicals together (there are strong anti-nationalist strains), but this is a really good cultural study from someone who has been in it and is able to explain it to people who haven't been in it, and perhaps break some of the rose-tinted lenses some of her former comrades see through.

Having only a barbershop mug to remember my father by is a mood.

I'm listening to this one, and I'm having a hard time with the narrator, George Guidall. The way he narrates requires full attention. If I could give my full attention to the book, I wouldn't use an audiobook. Even at 0.9-speed I miss a lot of what he says. I love the book though. And the wedding of Camacho is legendary. I too would eat like Sancho.

Baldwin is so good at creating voice. I could listen to Tish all day.

This is more like a personal history than an apology, and I'm here for it. Quirky upper middle-class Brit with famous atheist brother.

I wanted to read a quick book because I'm in the middle of a bunch of long ones and this is the first that sustained interest. It's creepy like Dean can be, and bizarre. I'm not sure why he's been so interested in physical deformities lately.

The intrigue is getting too complex. I don't know if I like it.

The second part of this is becoming so meta and it feels like Ishmael Reed almost.

I'm not sure I buy the ordered society the Pope espouses. Of course I haven't finished this, but it seems to support the workers by taking a middle ground by saying people will take care of each other if they love God, and then it will be a well ordered society, and class stratification will be fair and natural. Sure, but I don't buy that class stratification is a pre-fall condition. Eve came from Adam's side, etc.

It will be interesting to see how newly disgraced characters will be redeemed.

Why people would abridge this, at least the way they do it, is beyond me. They cut out all the best parts.
