In all honesty I am questioning the decision to kill off Will. I obviously loved seeing him get got but there was rising tension surrounding Marga dating Tess's RAPIST. Would Tess warn Marga? Would Marga even believe her? Would she have Tess removed from expedition for her "slander?" It would've put a real wrench into finding the Polar Serpent and making things right with Pathka, and now that tension is just... gone.

I can't believe this book opened with a vicious mermaid attack and yet I'm bored out of my mind. I don't think the reader needs to see every moment leading up to getting on the boat. It should've opened on the boat and anything important from before could've been mention in other ways. This is a weird instance where telling is better than showing imo.

I love finding out more about the quigutls!! And seeing Seraphina through someone else's eyes is especially interesting. To humans she comes off more like a saar but to dragons she's more human and that makes perfect sense. How does Rachel Hartman write fantasy exposition that doesn't make me want to claw my eyes out? Tess is so unlike any female YA protag I've read before I love her

THIS IS THE TENTH TIME KAWAHARA HAS RESTATED WHAT THE PLOT IS. NEARLY 200 PAGES INTO THE BOOK. AS IF I DONT KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON. I MADE A SOUND LIKE A DYING ANIMAL. HE MIGHT THINK HIS READERS ARE STUPID BUT I KNOW THE TRUTH. ITS HIM. HE IS THE STUPID ONE.
